Solar Critter Guard Installation

Custom-cut galvanized mesh fencing installed around the entire perimeter of your solar array — the most effective way to keep pigeons, squirrels, and rats out from under your panels.

Critter guard mesh installed around residential solar panels

The moment solar panels go on your roof, they create the most attractive real estate in the neighborhood for pigeons, squirrels, roof rats, and other pests. The 4–6 inches of shaded, protected, weatherproof space between the panels and the roof deck is a perfect nesting site — warm, hidden from predators, and hard for you to reach. Critter guards solve the problem at the source. We install a purpose-built stainless or PVC-coated steel mesh around the entire perimeter of your array, clipped to the panel frames with non-invasive clips designed for solar. Once it's in, birds and rodents simply can't get under the panels anymore.

Why pests love the space under solar panels

  • Shade and shelter from Southern California sun
  • Protection from hawks, cats, and other predators
  • Warmth from the panels acting like a heat trap
  • Flat, dry deck perfect for building nests
  • Hidden from view — most homeowners don't notice for months
  • Once one bird nests, others follow within the same season

What critter guards actually stop

  • Pigeons and doves nesting and roosting under panels
  • Squirrels chewing wiring and gnawing on module frames
  • Roof rats using the array as a highway between homes
  • Windblown leaves and debris from packing in under the panels
  • Buildup of droppings, feathers, and nesting material on the roof
  • Follow-up infestations after a one-time cleanup

Our mesh — built to last on a SoCal roof

Cheap plastic clips and hardware-store chicken wire won't survive a summer in Los Angeles. We use materials chosen specifically for rooftop solar:

  • Rust-resistant steel mesh with a UV-stable black coating
  • Small enough openings to block juvenile birds and rodents
  • Rigid enough to hold shape without sagging into the panels
  • Solar-specific clips that attach to the module frame — no drilling into panels or roof
  • Low-profile finish that stays hidden from ground level
  • Rated to hold up through years of sun, heat, and wind exposure

How installation works

Most critter guard jobs are completed in a single visit. Here's how it goes:

  • Inspection of the array, roof, and existing pest activity
  • Photos of the array before we begin
  • Cleanup of accessible nests, droppings, and debris under the panels
  • Custom cutting of the mesh to match every edge, gap, and irregular section
  • Attachment to the panel frames with stainless clips (no roof penetrations, no drilling into panels)
  • Perimeter walk to confirm every gap is sealed
  • Final photos so you can see the finished install

Cleanup first, then protect

If birds or rodents have already been under your panels, installing mesh over the top of an active nest just traps the problem in. We almost always recommend cleaning out accessible nesting material and droppings first, then installing the guard so nothing gets back in. Both can typically be done in the same visit.

How much does it cost?

Critter guard pricing depends on the linear footage of your array's perimeter, roof height and pitch, ease of access, and whether cleanup is needed first. Most homes fall in a predictable range, and we give you a firm quote before any work starts — text photos of your array to 818-275-0760 for the fastest estimate.

Critter guards significantly reduce the ability of birds and rodents to nest under your panels, but no exclusion product is a 100% guarantee against all wildlife activity forever. Warranty specifics depend on your panel manufacturer — our clip-based install avoids drilling into panels or roof surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will critter guards damage my panels or void my warranty?+

No. We attach the mesh to the aluminum panel frame using clips specifically designed for solar — we never drill into the panel or the roof. If you have concerns about your specific panel warranty, we're happy to talk through the install method before you book.

Do you clean under the panels before installing?+

Yes — that's actually the most important part. We remove accessible nests, droppings, feathers, and debris before the mesh goes on. Sealing over an active nest just traps the problem.

What about baby birds or active nests?+

Active nests with eggs or chicks may be protected under California and federal wildlife laws depending on the species. We inspect first and give you honest options — sometimes that means scheduling the install for after the nesting cycle ends.

Can I see the mesh from the ground?+

Barely. We use low-profile black mesh that sits tight against the panel frame. From the street it usually just looks like a thin dark line under the array.

Does the mesh affect my panels' cooling or airflow?+

No. The mesh openings are large enough to allow full airflow under the panels — it's only small enough to block birds and rodents, not air.

How long does the mesh last?+

Our galvanized, coated mesh is rated to hold up for many years in the Southern California climate. If a section ever gets damaged (falling branch, roof work), it can be spot-repaired without redoing the whole array.

Do you service the entire LA area?+

Yes — we install critter guards across Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
